Lecture 9: Platelet Function and Pathophysiology

Platelets have a critical role in primary hemostasis.

A wide range of hereditary and acquired disorders impact platelet function, leading to bleeding

Objectives:

  1. Recognize the common clinical presentation of qualitative platelet disorders

  2. Understand the typical mechanisms by which inherited defects of platelet function occur and list a disorder that exemplifies each mechanism

  3. Describe the most common acquired platelet function defects and their clinical presentations.
