Lecture 7: Not All Thrombocytopenia is ITP

OBJECTIVES

1. To understand the mechanisms of drug-induced thrombocytopenias

2. To apply clinical prediction models in the management of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia

3. To recognize and learn the basics of management of disseminated intravascular coagulation

Peripheral smear from a patient with sepsis.  Note thrombocytopenia, but also schistocytes (Fragmented red cells).  This is consistent with Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).  ITP would not be expected to have schistocytes.  (Image from Gerald A Soff MD)
